How it works

How Equipledge works

Political contributions often end up paying for more ads, fundraising texts, and political outrage.

Equipledge lets supporters of opposing candidates pledge equal amounts. When those amounts are matched, neither campaign receives them. Each participant donates their own matched amount to a vetted organization working on an issue they chose. Any unmatched amount follows the fallback selected when the pledge was made.

Supporters of two candidates make planned pledges, pledge pools are compared, a provisional match is calculated, and participants receive instructions to complete donations directly.
Equipledge calculates the provisional match and sends instructions. It does not receive or transfer participant funds.

The four steps

1

Choose a race and candidate

Choose the race you care about and the candidate you already intended to support.

2

Choose an amount, issue, and organization

Enter the amount you planned to give, choose the issue that matters to you, and select a vetted organization working in that area.

Your issue and organization choices do not affect matching. Opposing participants do not need to choose the same issue or organization.

Equipledge checks a card as an anti-fraud measure. The pledged amount is not charged, and no money moves when you submit the pledge.

3

Equipledge matches opposing pledge amounts

Pledge totals remain hidden while the drive is open. When the drive closes, Equipledge compares the total pledged to each side.

The smaller pool is provisionally matched in full. Participants in the larger pool are provisionally matched in the same proportion.

For example, if one pool equals 80% of the other, 80% of each pledge in the larger pool is provisionally matched.

4

You receive personalized instructions

Equipledge sends each participant links based on:

  • the provisionally matched portion
  • the selected issue and organization
  • the unmatched fallback
  • the deadline for completing the transactions

The matched portion is completed as a charitable donation through Every.org.

Any unmatched portion follows the choice made when pledging: the participant may complete it through the candidate’s official contribution page or add it to the charitable donation.

Results are published after close

Equipledge publishes the pledge calculation after the drive closes. Published results separate total pledged, provisionally matched amounts, instructions sent, participant-reported completions, verified completions, expired or unfinished pledges, and the method used to calculate the match.

Why people participate

Act on the issue that brought you to the race

Political contributions help candidates compete for the opportunity to address problems after the election. Equipledge gives matched participants a way to begin addressing those problems now.

Choose the candidate you support, the amount you planned to give, and the issue that matters to you. If your pledge is matched, you donate the matched amount to a vetted organization already providing direct help in that area.

You keep your political preference. Your matched amount supports tangible work on the issue you care about. Any unmatched amount follows the fallback you selected.

What Equipledge does not do

Hold donor money

Equipledge does not receive or hold political or charitable principal. Participants complete transactions directly through Every.org or the candidate’s official contribution page.

Charge the pledged amount

Equipledge checks a card as an anti-fraud measure but does not charge the pledged amount.

Publish live totals

Pledge totals remain hidden until the drive closes.

Sell donor information

Equipledge does not sell personal information or use it for advertising. Pledge-level records are deleted according to the retention schedule published for each drive.

Favor either side

Both sides use the same pledge rules, matching calculation, deadlines, and reporting standards.

FAQ

What happens if my full pledge is not matched?

The unmatched portion follows the choice you made when submitting the pledge. If you selected a political fallback, you will receive a link to the candidate’s official contribution page. If you selected a charity fallback, the unmatched portion will be included in your charitable donation instructions. Equipledge does not automatically charge either amount.

Who selects the organizations?

Participants choose from the vetted organizations made available for that drive. Each participant may choose a different issue and organization from the available list.

Is the charitable donation tax-deductible?

Charitable donations are completed through Every.org, which provides the donation receipt. Whether a donation is deductible depends on the donor’s circumstances. Equipledge does not provide tax advice.

How can I review the match calculation?

After a drive closes, Equipledge publishes the pledge totals, the matching method, and the resulting calculation. When available, the result page also provides the algorithm version and a downloadable record. This allows others to reproduce the calculation. It does not by itself verify that participants completed their transactions.

Does Equipledge charge my card?

No. Equipledge does not charge the pledged amount. The card check is used as an anti-fraud measure. After the drive closes, you complete the applicable transactions separately through the personalized links provided.

Is a pledge a completed donation?

No. A pledge records your intention to act after the drive closes. No charitable donation or political contribution occurs when the pledge is submitted.

What happens if I do not complete the transaction?

The transaction will be marked unfinished and eventually expired. It will not be included in verified completed totals.

What happens if participants on one side complete less than participants on the other side?

The result is reconciled using completed and verified transactions from both sides. Only equal completed amounts from the two sides are reported as fulfilled matched giving. Any additional charitable donation completed by one side is reported separately.

What does “verified” mean?

Each result states the verification method used. A transaction may be participant-reported, supported by a reviewed receipt, confirmed by a third-party platform, or reviewed by an outside organization.

Does Equipledge claim that equal political contributions always have the same effect?

No. Equipledge matches equal dollar amounts. It does not claim that every dollar has the same strategic value to every candidate or campaign.

Is Equipledge affiliated with a candidate, party, or campaign?

No. Equipledge is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any candidate, political party, political committee, campaign, or listed organization.
